Essential Needs Support

At Temple University and across the City of Philadelphia, essential needs support is available to help you navigate challenges like food insecurity, housing instability, and financial hardship—providing what is essential for your student success. 

Food Resources
  • The Cherry Pantry is Temple University’s on-campus food pantry, dedicated to ensuring that student success is not undermined by basic need insecurity. Conveniently located on the first floor of the Howard Gittis Student Center, the Cherry Pantry provides free, nutritious food and essential items to any student in need, no questions asked. Whether you need short-term support or ongoing help, the pantry is here for you. More information can be found here.

  • If you’re experiencing food insecurity, you can apply to receive donated meal swipes through the Fall 2025 Swipe Out Hunger program. The Office of Student Support and Advocacy is distributing meal swipes to students in need to help ensure you have access to nutritious meals at Johnson and Hardwick dining halls throughout the semester.   • Students seeking additional food assistance can find comprehensive information on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps,  eligibility specifically tailored for college students, including income guidelines and qualifying criteria. Accessing SNAP can be a vital resource in ensuring you have consistent, nutritious food while focusing on your academic success. More information can be found here

  • The City of Philadelphia has a Free Food and Meal Finder resource to allow residents to browse food resources available to them. More information can be found here

Housing Resources
  • In partnership with the Beasley School of Law, the Tenant Rights Help for Temple Students program offers free legal information on tenants’ rights and basic landlord-tenant issues. Staffed by trained Temple law students, walk-in hours are available every Tuesday from 12pm to 1pm in the Cherry Pantry during the Fall 2025 semester.

  • The Basic Needs Assistance Program with Avery Philly is designed to help students reduce the costs of housing and food for the 2025-26 academic year. To be eligible, students must not have already committed to live on-campus or signed a lease for an off-campus property other than Avery Philly for the 2025-26 academic year. Eligible students will receive access to discounted rent at Avery Philly, along with additional funds to assist with food expenses. Please note that the priority application deadline was Monday, April 28th, 2025, and applications are now closed.

  • The Office of Off Campus Living support team is here to support you in making informed decisions about where to live and how to be successful in the area surrounding campus. More information can be found here

Clothing Resources
  • Temple University's Career Center has a partnership with The Wardrobe to offer students discounted second-hand and free professional attire. More information can be found here.

  • The Office of Student Support and Advocacy distributes free clothing vouchers to eligible students to be redeemed at pop-up Temple Thrift events. Apply for a voucher here.

  • Students in Klein College of Media and Communication can access the school’s Career Closet for free professional clothing. Students can stop by Room 7 in Annenberg Hall and request assistance from the Klein EDGE student workers.   

Financial Resources
  • The Student Affairs Emergency Fund provides short-term financial assistance with unusual or unforeseen circumstances. More information can be found here.

  • The PA Department of Education and uAspire have partnered to provide students with Financial Aid Assistance. Text the help desk anytime. A uAspire Advisor will respond within 24 business hours to help you complete the FAFSA and answer your questions. Text 313-PA-FAFSA or 313-723-2372. 

  • Temple University's Office of Student Financial Services readily assists all Temple students with the financial aid process. More information can be found here.

Health Resources
  • If you are a registered student at Temple University, Tuttleman Counseling Services offers support for your mental health needs. Assistance at is confidential and free of charge. TCS is located at 1700 N. Broad Street on the 2th floor. More information can be found here.

  • Student Health Services provides the eligible Temple University community with affordable, accessible and high-quality primary healthcare. The office is located at 1700 N. Broad Street on the 4th floor. More information can be found here.

  • You can meet with a Student Health Services Nutritionist (RD) on Temple’s Main Campus for free. More information can be found here.

  • A Free Menstrual Product Vending Machine is located outside of the Barnett Irvine Cherry Pantry in the Howard Gittis Student Center and on the second floor of the Charles library. These vending machines dispense quality menstrual products to those in the Temple community free of cost. Anyone in the Temple community can access the vending machine. Just be sure to bring your OwlCard (physical or digital). You are allotted two taps, or 10 products, per week. Your allotment resets every Sunday.

Transportation Resources
  • FLIGHT is Temple University’s free nighttime fixed-route shuttle loop service. Flight-branded shuttles circulate throughout the areas within and surrounding the main campus patrol zone. More information can be found here.

  • Secondhand Cycles is Bike Temple's bicycle surplus program. After refurbishing abandoned bicycles on campus, the bicycles are then sold back to students . The Office of Sustainability is changing up this 10-year old program and partnering with the Division of Student Affairs to ensure that these Secondhand Cycles get to the students who want and need them the most. Technology and Office Supply Resources
  • Temple Office Supply Swap, or TOSS, is a program to promote waste minimization and reuse. Surplus office supplies are made available for free to the Temple community. Temple University administrators, faculty, staff and students can drop off surplus office supplies or "shop" for what is needed in the lower level of the Student Center outside of the Cherry Pantry.
