Magdalena Gareca is a graduating honors student majoring in public health with a minor in applied epidemiology. Her passion for a career in global epidemiology is driven by her research on the impact of environmental factors on human health, including the effects of PFAS-contaminated drinking water on communities in Bucks and Montgomery Counties, and her development of a program proposal to educate and protect Philadelphians against West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases. Outside of her studies, Magdalena leads Temple University's Project HEAL, a wellness-centered student organization dedicated to preventing eating disorders among college students.
Catie Wolak, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the College of Public Health shares “In addition to her leadership and service experiences, Magdalena demonstrates all the skills and qualities of an exemplary student and future public health leader. She has excelled at her undergraduate coursework. Her cultural autobiography and Neighborhood Observation Project were in the top 5% of assignments to date. While her accomplishments alone set her apart, it is her character that makes her the ideal candidate for the Diamond Award. She embodies the core values of Temple – service, innovation, equity, perseverance, and excellence".
