HSC Recreation Center

The 15,000 sq. ft. recreation center includes a weight room, separate cardio area, plyometric room, basketball court, racquetball court, and dance studio averaging over 3,600 people per month using the facility. This includes students, staff, faculty from all HSC schools and the Temple University Health System. The weight room has a wide selection of dumbbells and other free weights including a total of 7 bench press, and squat racks, or try the kettlebells and plyoboxes. In addition, students can take part in fitness classes such as HIIT or Afro-Beats. The recreation center also sponsors multiple intramural sports throughout the year including basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, and table tennis.

The Temple HSC Recreation Center currently offers the following group fitness classes. Currently all classes are conducted remotely through Zoom with the meeting links below. Intramural Sports

Here you can information find about all HSC intramural sports and leagues. You can participate in basketball, soccer, racquetball and volleyball.

Team Entries

Registration for Fall intramural sports leagues begin late August. Registration for Spring intramural sports leagues begins early January. Decide on a sport league in which to participate. Organize friends, house and hall mates, and/or co-workers to form a team. Intramural registration is online and can be accessed from www.imleagues.com/Temple_University_HSC

Free Agents (Individual entered without a team)

Free agent registration is available for individuals who have not been able to join or find a team. Individual free agent registration is available online at www.imleagues.com/Temple_University_HSC.

  • Free agents are expected to attend captain’s meetings in order to attempt to place you with a team.  
  • SFC Activities and Operations cannot guarantee placement of all free agents with a team. 
  • If there are enough free agents to field a team one may be formed.
  • Individual fees are required for each specific sport. Specific fee amounts can be found in each corresponding sport link up top.

Intramural Handbook

All individuals participating in intramural sports should review the Intramural Handbook. It is the responsibility of the team captain to ensure all players are familiar with league rules and regulations. The intramural handbook is available as a pdf download on the right side of this page.  

Leisure/Open Recreation

The Temple HSC Recreation Center offers leisure/open recreation opportunities on the 1st floor of the SFC and in the HSC Rec Center.

Game Room & Lounge

Room 108 holds 4 Xbox Series X consoles & 4 Nintendo Switch consoles, with a multitude of games available to play! The room is also available as a study space and event space!

Pool, ping pong, foosball, and quad-air hockey are open for all guest of the Student Faculty Center.

Stop by Room 105 to rent any game equipment, including Xbox Controllers and games. All pool equipment can be found next to the table in the lobby.

Bouldering Wall

Hours of operation for the bouldering wall vary. There must be at least two staff members present in the gym for the wall to be open. If unsure if the wall is open, please call us at 215-707-3816!

The HSC Rec Bouldering Wall is now open!

The wall is located in the lower basement of the SFC in the old Racquetball Court. Guests must have valid recreation access in order to climb.

In order to climb, all guests must go through a short bouldering wall orientation and complete a waiver.

Lockers

Locker Rooms

The HSC Recreation Center has two Men's and Women's locker rooms available for guests to use. These locker rooms are available for all guests to use and include a dry sauna in the Men's and Women's locker rooms. There are an additional two single use bathrooms with showers located in the hallway behind the HSC Rec Center.

Lockers for Rent

There are full-size and half-size lockers available for rent in the Men's and Women's Locker Rooms in the Student Faculty Center on the HSC campus. These lockers must be rented and paid for beforehand at the Gym Desk. All locker reservations are semesterly. At the end of each semester, there will be a two week grace period where guests can renew their locker from the previous semester. If lockers are not renewed or cleared out by the end of those two weeks, belongings will be removed and bagged. Temple SFC holds onto belongings for one semester after being removed. If belongings are not claimed by the end of the following semester, items will be donated. Locker rental fees and locker renewal periods are listed below:

Daily Combination Lockers

Combination lockers are available in the stairwell adjacent to the gym desk, and some are available in each Locker Room. Combination lockers require a personal code to be used for that day and detailed instructions are posted on the lockers. Contents must be removed from daily combination lockers before the close of business that day.

Recreation Access

All university or hospital employees with a valid owl card are eligible to purchase access to the recreation facilities. There are two payment options: payroll deduction, or patron application (manually by semester or academic year).

Student Access

Effective Fall 2010, all matriculated Temple University students enrolled will be automatically assessed a portion of the Campus Rec access fee in their tuition bill as a part of the University Service Fee. Enrolled students who have paid the Campus Rec access fee are assigned swipe access through their Temple OWLcard. For additional information about the new fee assessment policy, please contact the Campus Recreation Main Office at 215-204-1267.

Temple University Full-Time Employees 

Full-time regular employees (not TUHS Employees) have the option to have the Campus Rec access fee deducted from their paychecks. A total deduction of $10 will be withdrawn from the employee’s paycheck each month.  

Employees desiring in paying their Campus Recreation access through Payroll Deduction will be able to enroll via the Staff Tools tab on TUPortal by selecting the Campus Recreation Payroll Deduction Membership option located within the University Forms section.  Swipe access will typically be granted within 48-hours of enrollment; however, users may present their enrollment form at a Campus Recreation facility for immediate access. Cancellation must be requested in person at either the Campus Recreation Main Office or the Student Faculty Center at HSC. For more information about payroll deduction, please contact the Recreation Manager at .

TUHS Full-time Employees (Payroll Deduction)

Full-time regular employees are given the option to have the Campus Rec access fee deducted from their paychecks. A total deduction of $10 will be withdrawn from the employee’s paycheck each month. Effective Fall 2005, the system allows employees to enroll in the program one time and have the membership automatically renew every September 1. Employees interested in paying for Campus Recreation access through payroll deduction may complete the payroll deduction application and physical injury waiver forms at the HSC Recreation Center desk in the lower basement of the Student Faculty Center, 3340 N Broad Street, or in the Campus Recreation Main Office, 1800 N. Broad St., Suite 303, Pearson/McGonigle halls. Swipe access is typically granted within 48 hours of enrollment; however, users may present their enrollment form at the facilities for immediate access. Cancellation must be requested in person with completion of a cancellation form. This can be done at the HSC Recreation Center desk, or at the Campus Recreation Main Office. TUHS full-time regular employees are now able to download, fill out and return by email their Payroll Deduction form and Waiver. Please view these forms on the right side of the page. Once completed, please email them to the Recreation Manager at 

Part-time Students, Part-time Employees, and Medical Residents (Patron Application):

Employees who are either ineligible for payroll deduction or do not wish to pay via payroll deduction may pay the Campus Rec Access Fee per term. This includes part-time non-matriculated students, medical residents, and part time employees. Payment may be made at the HSC Bursar’s office, located on the first floor of Kresge Hall, 3440 N. Broad Street, or at the Campus Recreation Main Office, 1800 N. Broad St. Suite 303, Pearson/McGonigle Halls with a valid OWLcard.

Once the fee is paid, return with your receipt to the HSC Recreation Center desk, or Campus Recreation Main Office to complete the patron application and physical injury waiver form.

Patron Application Recreation fees:

  • Employees: $120 for the year OR $55 per semester OR $30 for summer sessions I and II.
  • Students: $40 per semester OR $20 for just the summer. Summer membership is included in $40 spring semester recreation fee for students.

Within 48 hours of completing the Patron Application, swipe activation will be granted to the facilities. However, users may present their Campus Rec Access receipt at the recreational facility for immediate access.

Non-Temple Employees/Courtesy Card Holders

Patrons who work at Temple but not for Temple directly (i.e. Sodexo, Aramark, and Allied Barton) may use the recreation facilities, but must enroll at the Campus Recreation Main Office, 1800 N. Broad St., Suite 303, Pearson/McGonigle halls. For more information about courtesy access, please contact Campus Recreation at 215-204-1267.

Visiting Students

Visiting students should contact Tanner Noble, Recreation Manager to purchase recreation center access. Tanner can be reached via email at , or via phone at 215-707-7560.

Visiting students pay a non-refundable fee based on the entirety of their visit at $12/week. This will either be a 4 or 8 week block, meaning a $48 or $96 payment. Students should contact the Recreation Manager first to confirm their status as a visiting student prior to stopping by the desk to make payment. Payment will not be accepted until the Recreation Manager has confirmed the student’s status and is able to create the student’s access pass.

Visiting students will receive a special access privilege card to be used at all times along with a photo ID to gain access to any TU Campus Recreation facility. No card or photo ID, no admittance. The access privilege card will state the start and end dates of the student’s access and will only be valid for that time period. Other restrictions are on the card and will be explained to the visiting student.

*The visiting student policy is only applicable on the HSC Campus. Main Campus Recreation does not allow visiting student access*

Membership Fees

  • Employees: $55 per fall or spring semester, $30 for summer I and II, or $120 annually ($10/month via payroll deduction).
  • Please note an annual membership is based upon the academic year, not the date in which you become a member.
  • Visiting Students: $48 or $96, dependent on length of visiting block.

Membership Cancellation

Only employees using payroll deduction can cancel their membership. To cancel, the member must complete a payroll deduction cancellation form at the HSC Recreation Center desk or Campus Recreation Main Office. All others membership types are a one-time, non-refundable fee granting access until the membership term expires. After papers have been submitted, please allow up to a month for processing. If you are still seeing money deducted after a month, please contact the Recreation Manager.

Recreation Policies

General Facility Regulations

  • Water in closed, resealable plastic containers is allowed. All other drinks, and glass containers are confined to designated lounge areas. Outside food is not permitted inside the facilities. Smoking, tobacco, and gum are prohibited.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct and the use of profanity is prohibited.
  • All cardio machines have a 30 minute time limit.
  • Appropriate shoes, socks, and attire are required in activity areas. Non-marking athletic shoes are required in basketball courts, dance studio and racquetball courts. Closed-toe athletic shoes and shirts are required in all fitness areas. Jeans, pants with belts, and cutoff jeans are prohibited in workout areas.
  • The SFC Recreation Center reserves the right to search individual's bags for equipment, towels, or other Recreation Center property.
  • Unauthorized use of camera/video/audio recording devices is prohibited.  Authorization must be in writing and may only be provided by Camus Recreation full-time staff.
  • Members and guests may not provide personal training services, nutritional products, or other goods and services on the premises.
  • Lost and found items are turned into the Gym Desk Staff or Security Guard at the front entrance. All items are logged and tagged with the date. Items not claimed after 30 days will then be donated to charity.
  • Activity areas close 15 minutes prior to the posted facility closure.
  • Additional rules and regulations are posted in each activity space.
  • The SFC Recreation Center reserves the right to remove individuals from recreation facilities and to revoke membership based on that individual's actions. Failure to comply with the directions of staff and/or failure to identify onself when requested to do so will result in individuals being removed from the facility.

Personal Belongings

Gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in studios, fitness centers, hallways, or gymnasium. Personal belongings should be secured in lockers.  The SFC Recreation Center is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items.

Equipment

Equipment is available for daily checkout at the front gym desk. Late and damage fees will be assessed as appropriate.  For details, call the Gym Desk at (215) 707-3816.

Cardio Equipment Reservations

Cardio equipment must be reserved in order to be used. Reservations can be made up to one-hour in advance, and must be reserved in person at the gym desk. Your machine will be held for five minutes after your reservation time. If you still have not arrived your reservation will be forfeited.

Racquetball Room Reservations

Reservations are taken Monday - Friday, 7am-7:15pm, by phone at 215-707-3816. Reservations are taken no earlier than one day in advance. Reservations are one hour in length and are forfeited after ten minutes. One reservation per day, per person. Courts without reservations are available on a first come, first serve basis.

Guest Pass

Guest passes are issued as a membership privilege. An individual with a valid Temple ID may sponsor up to three guests per day. Alumni are not allowed to sponsor quests. The cost of a guest pass is $12. Sponsors must accompany their guest(s) at all times during their visit. The sponsor will be held responsible for actions or behavior associated with their guest. Solicitations of sponsors is a violation of this privilege. Passes may not be purchased for reasons of personal training or instruction. NO ONE UNDER 18 ALLOWED. *The guest pass policy is only applicable on the HSC Campus. Main Campus Recreation does not allow guest access*

ID Requirements

A valid Temple ID or Alumni card must be presented to enter any recreational facility. NOTE: Giving your ID/membership card to another, so that person may gain unauthorized access to a recreational facility, is prohibited. The ID will be confiscated and recreation privileges may be suspended.

Forgotten ID Policy

Patrons who forget or lose their ID will not be allowed access to facilities or programs. However, individuals have the following options:

  • Return with a valid Temple ID or Alumni Card.
  • Be sponsored by another eligible user and pay the $12 Guest Pass Fee.

Youth & Children Policies

NO ONE UNDER 18 ALLOWED.

Insurance Reimbursement

Employees with medical insurance plans through Keystone or Independence Blue Cross can enroll in the Healthy Lifestyles Program and be reimbursed for fitness membership. The Healthy Lifestyles program is managed and operated by Independence Blue Cross. For more information, or to enroll, contact Blue Cross directly at 1-800-ASK-BLUE or 215-241-3367, or visit their website at www.ibxpress.com.

In order to submit your reimbursement request to Healthy Lifestyles, the following steps must be completed:

  • Log your activity at the facilities by maintaining your Fitness Handbook, which can be obtained from the Healthy Lifestyles website at www.ibxpress.com. You may also print out an electronic access history report of your visits to the swipe-access facilities by logging onto TUPortal with your username and password. To obtain your history report, select the Content Layout section of TUPortal, click on the Staff Tools tab, and in the center column select New Channel. Then select the category Applications and Campus Recreation Center Access option, click on Add Channel. Your access history will populate and be accessible through the Staff Tools tab of your TUPortal.
  • Obtain a copy of your access receipt and a letter of confirmation of payment. To request this information, contact Tim Bradley, Recreation Coordinator via e-mail at . Please include your full name and TU ID number.
  • Once you have obtained all of the above, mail your history report and/or Fitness Handbook, Campus Recreation access receipt, and letter of confirmation to Independence Blue Cross, Attn: Healthy Lifestyles Fitness Program, 1901 Market St., P.O. Box 41880, Philadelphia, PA 19101-9131.
Reservation Policies/Rates

In providing reservation access for interested groups, we would hope to accommodate when the situation is reasonable and the activity appropriate, then proceed under the following assumption:

  • Group reservations would not be taken if they displaced or interfered with regularly structured activities and programs.
  • Group reservations would not be taken if their space needs would not allow for, at minimum, one available activity space for general student use.

Priority Reservation Access and Fees for Groups or Organizations

  • In providing reservation access for interested groups, we would hope to accommodate when the situation is reasonable and the activity appropriate, then proceed under the following assumption:

    • Group reservations would not be taken if they displaced or interfered with regularly structured activities and programs.
    • Group reservations would not be taken if their space needs would not allow for, at minimum, one available activity space for general student use.

Space Rentals for Groups or Organizations

  • Student sponsored organizations with 100% Temple University student participation has no rental fee (deposit required) and charged for any incurred costs.
  • Student sponsored organizations with mixed attendance is $25 per hour rental fee (deposit required) and charged for any incurred costs.
  • Student sponsored organizations with 100% Temple University student attendance, but involves an outside instructor or teacher, have a $25 per hour rental fee (deposit required) as well as certificate of insurance (if appropriate) and charged for any incurred costs.
  • University sponsored organizations with 100% Temple invidividuals is $25 per hour rental fee (deposit required) and charged for any incurred costs.
  • University sponsored organizations with mixed attendance is $50 per hour rental fee (deposit required) and charged for any incurred costs.
  • Non-University sponsored organizations is $50 per hour rental fee (deposit required) as well as certificate of insurance (if appropriate) and charged for any incurred costs.
