Academic Dishonesty

1. If an instructor suspects that a student has violated the Student Conduct Code’s Academic Dishonesty policy, a report is submitted through TUPortal via the University’s Academic Dishonesty Portal.

2. When an instructor reports a student for alleged academic misconduct, the reported student receives an email from Student Conduct and Community Standards (SCCS) informing them of the charge and providing them with a link to view the report in the Academic Dishonesty Portal through TUPortal.

3. Students are first prompted to either schedule a meeting with the instructor to discuss the report or to reject this meeting opportunity. If a student has already met with the faculty member or does not wish to do so before proceeding with the conduct process, they should select to reject this meeting.

4. After meeting with their instructor, or rejecting to do so, the student should re-enter the Portal and select one of three resolutions.

  • Resolution 1: the student settles the case by accepting both responsibility for committing academic dishonesty and the instructor’s recommended consequence, otherwise known as a “sanction.”
  • Resolution 2: the student settles the case by accepting the instructor’s recommended sanction, but not explicitly accepting responsibility for committing academic dishonesty.
  • Resolution 3: the student chooses to contest the report against them by attending a Hearing with SCCS through which their case will be heard, and a decision will be made regarding responsibility for any potential violations made against the Student Conduct Code.

5. If a student selects Resolution 1 or 2, the student’s case will be processed, and they will receive an outcome letter informing them that they have been found responsible for a violation of the Student Conduct Code and listing the sanction(s) they have received for that violation.

6. The case is also closed in the Academic Dishonesty Portal, and the instructor is notified of the case’s outcome.

7. If a student selects Resolution 3, they will proceed to either an Administrative Hearing or a Board Hearing depending upon the severity of the sanction recommended by the instructor (more information about each type of Hearing can be found on our website).

  • After the Hearing, the student will be notified of the outcome via email. and the instructor will be notified of the outcome once the case is closed in the Academic Dishonesty Portal.
