Assistive Technology

Assistive technology (AT) is any hardware, software, or piece of equipment that is commonly used to improve the functional capabilities of individuals with a disability.

Due to Temple's coursework being moved to an online format, we understand that there might be a greater need for assistive technology support.

Who Can Benefit from Assistive Technology?

AT can support students who:

  • Have difficulty using a mouse or keyboard.

  • Experience challenges with reading, writing, or processing information.

  • Experience pain or discomfort when using computers or devices.

  • Find it difficult to take notes in class.

  • Struggle with attention, focus, or organization.

Accessing Assistive Technology through DRS

AT is available to students registered with DRS. To be eligible for AT accommodations, you must:

  • Register with DRS and provide appropriate documentation of your disability.
  • Meet with your DRS Coordinator to discuss how your disability is impacting you at Temple.
  • Receive an AT referral from your DRS Coordinator.
  • Meet with a member of the AT team to determine which AT best meets your needs.

Assistive Technology Software & Apps

Some of the most commonly provided AT tools at Temple include:

  • Kurzweil 3000: A comprehensive text-to-speech and study software with tools for reading, writing, and visual learning. Some key features include, outlining tools, built-in thesaurus and dictionary, and study guides.
  • Genio Notes (formerly Glean): A dynamic notetaking tool that synchronizes the class audio recording, typed notes, and slide deck. It helps students stay organized, study, and easily review key material.
  • Bookshare: The world’s largest accessible online library. It can be used to find your textbooks in various formats, including digital, audio, or braille.

Additional AT Resources

Read&Write: A versatile text-to-speech and study suite available to all Temple students at no cost. You do not need to be registered with DRS or have accommodations to use Read & Write. Features include reading documents aloud, highlighting, vocabulary building, and screen masking.
