Assistive technology (AT) is any hardware, software, or piece of equipment that is commonly used to improve the functional capabilities of individuals with a disability.
Due to Temple's coursework being moved to an online format, we understand that there might be a greater need for assistive technology support.
Who Can Benefit from Assistive Technology?
AT can support students who:
Have difficulty using a mouse or keyboard.
Experience challenges with reading, writing, or processing information.
Experience pain or discomfort when using computers or devices.
Find it difficult to take notes in class.
Struggle with attention, focus, or organization.
Accessing Assistive Technology through DRS
AT is available to students registered with DRS. To be eligible for AT accommodations, you must:
- Register with DRS and provide appropriate documentation of your disability.
- Meet with your DRS Coordinator to discuss how your disability is impacting you at Temple.
- Receive an AT referral from your DRS Coordinator.
- Meet with a member of the AT team to determine which AT best meets your needs.
Assistive Technology Appointments
Once you have been approved for AT accommodations, you will receive an AT referral email from your DRS coordinator.
You will follow the included link and schedule an appointment with a member of the AT team.
During this meeting you can expect to discuss AT options, have AT demos, and be provided with instructions on how to access your AT.
Assistive Technology Software & Apps
Some of the most commonly provided AT tools at Temple include:
- Notetaking: We have software or devices that help students take typed or hand written notes.
- Speech to text: We have software that allows students to dictate their assignments.
- Text to speech: We have software that allows students to have their assignments, handouts, and articles read aloud to them.
- Alternative format for textbooks: We can provide licenses to a digital library so students can access their textbooks in alternative formats such as audio, word, or BRF.
- Please note if your textbook is not available or in the format that you need, you must request the book using the book request form. This process can take several weeks, so it is recommended that students check the availability of their textbooks as soon as possible.
