Living Learning Communities

Living Learning Communities (LLCs) are residential communities of students and faculty who share a common interest.

Each LLC is developed with a specific population in mind and has dedicated professional and student staff members. Staff and Faculty work to develop an intentional co-curriculum based on the theme of each LLC, and work with student staff living on the floors to create an experiential community.

LLC Program Goals

  • Develop partnerships with faculty and staff
  • Dialogue with peers about academic and social issues outside the classroom
  • Increase satisfaction with overall academic experience and persist at a higher rate
  • Enhance students’ connection with Temple University and the city of Philadelphia
College of Science and Technology LLC

The College of Science & Technology LLC is designed to help foster a sense of community amongst first-year freshmen in the College of Science & Technology. Students in this community all have majors in the College of Science & Technology, so you will live amongst like-minded peers who will be taking similar courses. Through this community, students will learn important success skills for a CST major, explore the different opportunities in the Science & Technology field, and develop life-long connections with their peers. Students in this community will receive extra support from CST Advising.

Learning Goals

  • Students will gain a better understanding of the types of study skills and habits they will need to be successful in a major in the College of Science & Technology.
  • Students will gain a better understanding of potential careers in a Science & Technology field.
  • Students will become better acquainted with Science & Technology resources in both the Temple & Philadelphia communities.
  • Students will form life-long connections with their peers to help support each other throughout their academic journey.
  • Students will better understand the requirements for their CST major.

Requirements

  • Must be registered first year student in the College of Science and Technology
  • Enroll and participate in SCTC 1001 Seminar
  • Participate in all programs sponsored by the College of Science and Technology LLC Program.

In the event a housing assignment was booked in another accommodation, submitting the request for this LLC will allow University Housing and Residential Life to cancel any bookings made previously in order assign you to this LLC. 

Engineering LLC

The Engineering LLC is designed for students with a desire to be part of an active group representing Temple, on and off campus. Residents will have the opportunity to work with other schools, engage with faculty, connect with professionals, and explore how their major can contribute to the Philadelphia Community.

  • Must be registered in the College of Engineering.
  • Enroll and participate in Engineering 1101, Introduction to Engineering, as directed by the College of Engineering Curriculum.
  • Participate in all programs sponsored by the Engineering LLC Program.
Fox School of Business LLC

The Fox LLC  students are able to hold one another accountable and help each other succeed academically through their own study groups and excel in their lower-level business courses together. Students also participate in various networking and social activities early on, so they understand the importance of professionalism and meeting other students and people within the business community.

Learning Outcomes

  • Expand learning beyond the classroom and provide a support network within the Fox School of Business.
  • Provide students with professional development opportunities
  • Form relationships among students who have similar goals and interests and allow students to learn the benefit of networking

Requirements

  • Students should be accepted to the Fox School of Business.
  • Register for HRM1101 (Human Resource Management) and FOX LLC Freshman Seminar in the Fall semester (First-Year Students)
  • Register for ACCT2101 and/or MKTG2101 in the Fall semester (Returning students)
  • Participate in all programs sponsored by the Fox School of Business LLC Program.
  • Participate in at least one business-oriented student organization by the end of the students’ first year.\n6. Global LLC

The Global LLC brings together domestic students and international students from all over the world to learn from one another through their differences as well as their similarities. The Global LLC supports cultural experiences among community members to prepare the residents to be global citizens. Students are able to use what they learn in the classroom every day and apply it to their interactions with each other. Additionally, the Global LLC serves as a bridge to connect participants with important resources and leadership development opportunities across Temple’s campus.

Learning Outcomes

  • Acclimation of new international students to Temple and the U.S.
  • Expose domestic students to cultures other than their own to encourage cross-cultural understanding.
  • Encourage domestic students to think about study abroad opportunities.
  • Provide support for international students both academically and socially as they adjust to a new culture and learning environment in the U.S.

Requirements

  • Open all majors with an interest in international affairs.
  • Register for First Year Seminar I - UNVS 1001, the Global LLC section (first-year students)
  • Register for Global Citizenship - UNVS 2003 (returning students)
  • Residents of this community will be assigned with one domestic student and one international student in each space.
Honors LLC Program

The Honors LLC is the residential hub for members of the Honors Program, which creates opportunities for high-achieving students to build a sense of community and transition smoothly to campus life. Research shows that students learn better together in community settings, in shared spaces and through shared academic experiences. Students in the Honors LLC don't have to worry about the balance between getting good grades and making good friends. They do both.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop positive relationships with faculty and staff through university seminars and lower level Honors courses.
  • Build a sense of community among high-achieving students through unique programming opportunities provided by the Honors Activities Board, Honors Peer Mentors, Residential Peer Mentor, and Honors Program staff.
  • Foster informal connections among upper and lower level Honors students as a result of the four-year housing option.

Requirements

  • Acceptance to the Honors Program.
  • Complete a minimum of one (1) Honors course first semester at Temple and at least three (3) before the end of the first year.

Klein College of Media and Communication LLC

Klein College of Media and Communication LLC students are able to support one another in their academics, inform each other about Klein's events and opportunities, encourage participation in clubs and activities, and collaborate on projects. Past members have been involved in student government, leadership development, and major-related clubs, such as The Temple News, Temple Update and WHIP Radio. Klein LLC members contribute to an informed and active student body.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to explain and discuss the role of communication in public life.
  • Students will develop an ongoing relationship with a mentor in a Klein major.
  • Each student will submit a final reflection on the LLC experience at the end of Spring semester.

Performing and Cinematic Arts LLC

With close proximity to Presser Hall, Conwell Dance Theater, and Tomilson Theater, Performing and Cinematic Arts LLC students have opportunities to attend special events and lectures at cultural venues on campus and throughout the city of Philadelphia. This LLC allows music and dance students to collaborate in the classroom, practice and perform together, and be involved in community activities.

School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) LLC

The School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) LLC is designed exclusively for first-year freshman students in one of the School’s undergraduate degree programs of BS in Sport & Recreation Management and BS in Tourism & Hospitality Management. The Community will provide unique connections that will cultivate a network of support within and among these students as they are exposed to the sport, recreation, tourism, and hospitality industries. Additionally, students will attend activities such as guest speaker events and field trips to industry partner locations.

Tyler School of Art and Architecture LLC

The Tyler School of Art and Architecture LLC aids in retention of students during a very intense foundation program in their freshman year. Students have access to a residence-hall-based studio space and support from other students in the Tyler School of Art and Architecture program through enrichment activities. Students have the opportunity to connect with the Tyler Dean’s Student Advisory Committee, which creates events and activities to enhance the Temple student community. Past events include co-sponsoring the Craft Bash, a craft-activities event open to the Temple community, and a meditation drum circle.

Sustainability LLC

The Sustainability LLC provides space for students interested in sustainability initiatives and programs on campus to live together with other environmental and climate advocates. The Sustainability LLC will build a community of student leaders who prioritize reducing their environmental impact as stewards of 1940 and campus. They grow skills and knowledge of sustainable practices and establish sustainable habits through peer education and collaboration.

Students have access to a residence-hall sustainability resources such as a community garden on site, action toolkits for Green Living, free and discounted passes for sustainable transportation and volunteer and service learning opportunities around the city. This LLC connects students to the Office of Sustainability to grow and enhance their involvement and leadership on campus via EcoReps, the Office of Sustainability's peer education program.
